Pickoff Moves To Second Base

ATTENTION PITCHERS: One of the big misconceptions in baseball is that playing the game keeps you in shape to pitch. I wish that was true. It's not. To get to the next level, preparation matters. Big league pitchers spend far more time preparing to pitch than actually pitching. A. Reverse Pivot Move

This is our basic move to second base because the pitcher can throw quicker and accurately. From the set position, the pitcher checks the runner with a full head turn, then looks to the plate. Next he just turns his head back to face 3rd base using his peripheral vision to check the runner and shortstop.

To be more deceptive during the move, we prefer the pitcher uses the pivot technique versus the jump turn. Pivot the pivot foot heel up over the rubber and spin the entire body around, and stride directly to second base with the lead foot. The throw should be a firm, 3/4 overhand throw. The key to the move is quickness.

If there is no play on the runner, the pitcher does not have to throw.

B. The Quick Move

The pitcher prepares this move in his resting, sign taking stance. He confirms the pitch sign and starts into the stretch move. When the hands hit together, break using a quick jump turn and throw with a 3/4 overhead short arm throwing technique. If there is no play, the pitcher does not have to throw it.

C. The Spin Move

This move is difficult to execute because it requires good body control and agility. But when done properly, it is very effective and can be very deceptive. The best time to use this move is in a sac bunt situation, or in a steal or hit-and-run situation.

The pitcher comes to his normal set position, checks the runner, turns his head back to the plate to pick up his target and begins to lift the lead leg. As the lead leg reaches it’s apex, without hesitating, he pivots his foot and body open and steps directly to 2nd base with the stride foot and leg, and makes a throw.
